I talk about aging a lot on here and the thought process of “easing” into it, as oppose to just letting it slam into you when it’s too late (unavoidable things aside). And the way to ease into it is by stretching, working out, and healthy eating habits. Nourishing yourself and building yourself up. I’m sure people get tired of hearing that, but the purpose of this article is to provide a different perspective on the thought process that goes into working out, nourishing your body with good eating habits, and being in shape as a person.

Unless you are speaking in an echo chamber of like minded fitness oriented people, broaching “eat healthy and exercise” will get you all kinds of mixed reactions. I think a lot of people would agree that “being healthy is good” when directly asked, but when it comes to applying said practice to themselves that’s when the walls will come up, the dismissals start, the “my knees and bad back”, “I have no time”, “I don’t want to change.” (Sometimes that last one is unspoken or said between the lines). Talking to others about fitness, you will quickly realize that some people just do not care about themselves like they should or they are aligned with detrimental vanity goals. I think it’s a topic that can subvertly tell you a lot about someone through a single conversation.
Simply, some people care about being healthy, present day and in older age, and some people don’t. Some people see beyond the trees and some don’t. But if you don’t have your health, you have nothing. You won’t even be able to get “xyz thing that you think is currently more important” on your list done without your health. There is no future without your health.
But if you do want to start caring and you know you want to better yourself, but you just don’t know where to start or it feels too daunting, what’s the first step?
I’ve said this before, but when you love yourself you want to help yourself. Eventually your body will reflect your self esteem. If you see yourself poorly, you handle yourself poorly, and it manifests in your physical through skin, body, or maybe some other ailment. Exercise and nourishment are love letters to yourself. “I care about me and want to do right by me, I want to give myself a future, I want to be the best version of me for myself to manifest all my wants and desires and to reach out and get them.”
First, the only thing you need to keep in mind when learning to exercise is just to show up. This also is how you begin turning the wheel of learning to love yourself, because you are actively choosing to show up for yourself and do right by you. Even if you can only do 5 minutes of walking, at least it was 5 minutes spent doing something good and beneficial for the present you and for future you. When it comes to eating well, education is the most key. The more you know about foods and which foods affect which organs, you’ll be able to navigate better. Food is a very person specific topic, so I won’t go into too much depth, but the more you know about ingredients and the purpose/benefits of certain foods, the more you’ll be able to make informed choices.
As any person who regularly works out can tell you, there’s a lot of mental fortitude that’s required with maintaining health, and especially so, being consciously healthy for the rest of your life. It takes never ending discipline and never ending caring. But this mindset is developed over time and naturally through the journey. You learn to trust yourself. Self loathing can be a result of thinking you never amount to anything (there are other reasons but this is one) and exercising and nourishment directly disproves that, because the positive results happen slowly but they do happen.
And why is any of this even important? I think people get confused with caring about exercising and health only equaling vanity. It is so much more than that. To understand true health is to know that it’s mental as much, if not more, than physical. And when it’s mental and physical, it affects your emotional state too. Exercising gives you dopamine and regulates your nervous system. Eating well gives you energy and proper organ function. But I do believe that feeling (and looking) good physically boosts your mental as well. It truly all goes hand in hand in a rotating triangle, where mental flows to physical flows to emotional, and in the inverse direction and in different combinations. It all makes up the psyche of you.
Don’t think of being healthy as a mountain to climb. It’s really just a line you need to walk to. A line that you draw in front of yourself and that you cross by taking one small step over it. Then you step over that line everyday, building trust by doing so, and eventually walking the scenic route to your most fulfilling life.
